Cheese, Tapas & Wine Heaven – Can Recasens, Barcelona
Dinner at Can Recasens feels almost like participating in a theatrical event, the stage is set from the moment you arrive, doors open at 9pm and the “audience” is already excitedly queuing up outside on Ramble Poble Nou.
As you negotiate your way through the door of a little delicatessen shop, maneuvering around all the artfully arranged fruit & veg that decorates the floors & stairs, its like walking onto a set, the wonderfully pungent aroma of vintage cheese and cured meats are a taster of whats to come.
Follow the usher (aka: friendly waiter) winding your way through a maze of tiny rooms, each with two or three tables to find your allocated seats (you need a reservation every night of the week, summer or winter) just as the curtain rises on a sumptuous feast of cheeses, hams, pates & tomato bread, old fashioned tapas to make your mouth water !
The cheese platters are stacked high with Catalan, Spanish and french varieties with lots of unusual tastes, the green pesto cheese is out of this world, as is the terracotta dish filled with melted provolone and sun dried tomatoes. A platter of acorn fed Iberian ham with tomato bread is an absolute must and the foie with caramelized onion was also a firm favorite. All washed down with a bottle of full bodied, fruity Priorat red wine.
The only “problem” was that as we wanted to try so many of the delicious offerings and the platters were so well stocked we could have invited a couple of friends to join us and still have plenty left over, we rather cheekily asked our waiter if we could have a doggy bag and he happily packaged up all the cheese as if we’d bought it at the deli 🙂
The atmosphere is lively as most tables are groups of 3 or 4 so the conversation and wine are flowing, probably not a place for quiet meditation, the candles & fairylights lend a rather romantic air to a rustic farmhouse kind of decoration.
The evening flew by as we chatted, gradually eating & drinking our way through all we’d ordered, when we asked for the check we realized we’d been there over two hours !
Check was 35€ each so great value for money, especially as we had plenty of cheese in our doggy bag for a picnic lunch the next day.
Will definitely return with a group of friends !
