Safari & Swim, Magens Bay, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands
A morning’s excursion on St Thomas
Oasis of the Seas stopped over in St Thomas for a morning and we decided to grab a cab and head over to Magens Bay, voted one of the Top 10 beaches in the world !!
We maneuvered our way out of the port a lot easier than in Nassau, the touts were less “in your face” and it seemed more organised. In St Thomas all the taxis were big jeep like trucks with people carrier trailers attached, they call them “Safaris”. Our Safari had 4 benches with 3/4 people squeezed onto each. The ride over to Magens Bay was a rather bumpy mountainous trip which involved hanging onto our fellow passengers to avoid falling out, (the Safari had no rails on one side and no seat belts), you couldn’t hold onto the outer rails as we were taking half the roadside foliage with us on each bend. Needless to say, Ninja Grandma was nearly on her knees counting rosary beads 😉
Magens Bay – Voted of the Top 10 Beaches in the World
Magens Bay was a nice beach but hey in the Caribbean thats pretty easy, I was actually surprised that it made it onto the Top 10, not that it wasn’t beautiful, just that theres a HUGE amount of competition. White sand, Turquoise water, Palm trees ….
We snorkelled around the bay and saw some wildlife but nothing spectacular.
We paid $20 USD return each (20 minute ride), which is $40 USD less than the same excursion arranged by the ship.
